This course is number five of eight total 5-hour courses totaling 40-hours of comprehensive custody training. The full catalog of courses is designed to provide participants with the knowledge to express legally compliant, ethical and comprehensive custody evaluations. All eight courses highlight controlling American Psychological standards of practice, AFCC guidelines, and California Rules of Court.

Participants will learn how to integrate stepfamilies into the evaluation process and recognize when to include step parents or not and will learn about the limitations regarding the inclusion of stepchildren in the evaluative process. Participants will relate how to evaluate families with children with special needs. Participants will be prepared how to explain about interfacing with Family Court Services Mediation and Child Welfare Services while conducting a custody evaluation. Participants will learn about the necessary legal terminology, what to do when they get a subpoena, and important information regarding testifying in court.

  • Evaluate step parents and step siblings for custodial parenting purposes
  • Evaluate families with children with special needs to understand what particular issues should be assessed.
  • Describe how Family Court Services (FCS) Mediation works and how FCS can impact the evaluation process.
  • Summarize how Child Welfare Services (CWS) works and understand how it can impact the evaluation process.
  • Recall the necessary legal terminology and the process of testifying from California attorney Stephen Wagner.
  • Recognize aspects of the evaluator’s role that are impacted by the court system, what clinicians should do when answering subpoenas; and tips on testifying in court from attorney Stephen Wagner.
