This is the fourth part of eight 5-hour courses that comprise the 40-hours of comprehensive training to become a custody evaluator in California.
Part 4 – Custody Evaluations 101: Allegations and Sensitivities; 5.0 Hours
This course shall provide participants with the information necessary to evaluate and provide recommendations for frequent allegations that are encountered in custody disputes. Parental alienation and alignment of a child with one parent over the other are concepts that are often alleged during the evaluation process. In addition, sexual, physical, and emotional abuse allegations are often encountered. Participants will learn how to manage such allegations, assess for, and provide evidence-based recommendations when these allegations are encountered. Participants will also acquire knowledge regarding various sensitivities needed when addressing issues involving diversity in cultural and religious differences, socioeconomic levels, and LGBT and transgender families.

- Summarize the history & background of parental alienation and the alignment of a child with one parent.
- Evaluate frequent allegations of parental alienation and alignment of a child with one parent in custody disputes.
- Discuss and provide recommendations when sexual, physical, or emotional abuse is alleged.
- Give examples of sensitivities when addressing issues involving diversity in cultural and religious differences, and socioeconomic levels.
- Use the APA Guidelines for working with Lesbian, Gay, & Bisexual families.
